3 local SEO tips that deliver business results

When it comes to marketing your local business online, search is a great place to start. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a number of small to mid-size local businesses, helping them grow their reach and their revenue using SEO.

One of the biggest hurdles we face when working with local clients is that they’ve been burned in the past by so-called “experts.” They’ve invested their hard-earned money only to see little, if any, return. This has led many local businesses to believe SEO is a scam or doesn’t work.

My goal is to share a few local SEO tips that actually work — and how you can start using them today to grow your business’s online reach.

Not all digital marketing agencies are created equal

I belong to numerous digital marketing message boards, and I frequently see posts asking for recommendations for “the best digital marketing agency.” This question is troubling for several reasons, which I’ll outline in this article.

Problem #1: What do you mean by digital marketing?

Asking for a “digital marketing agency” is analogous to calling the hospital because you need a “doctor.” Modern doctors specialize, sub-specialize, and even sub-sub-specialize today. There are neurologists who specialize in movement disorders, movement disorders specialists who specialize in Parkinson’s disease, and so on.

Digital marketing is no different. There are creative agencies, paid marketing agencies, content agencies and so forth. And within each of these categories, there are specialists who attack niches.

Like a hospital, it’s true that there are agencies that offer many services, but a multi-channel agency is not the right solution for every company (just like a generalist doctor is not the choice for every patient).

3 Not-So-SEO-Friendly trends to watch out for

1. New ads

Google is constantly experimenting with new ad formats that actually provide a better user experience than organic results. The better the ads, the less traffic that will be captured by organic listings. What are some examples of when PPC ads provide a better UX than organic results?

Google has rolled out home service ads to a few markets as a way of making it easier to find various contractors. Even sites with incredible local SEO will have a hard time competing with the convenience of these ads, not to mention the extremely valuable endorsement by Google.

How long does it take to rank in Google? (A study by Ahrefs)

If you’re doing client SEO, I guess every new client, without any exceptions, will ask you this question:

“How long till my website (page) ranks on top of Google?”

The common response to this question is obviously, “It depends,” because there are just too many variables to consider: website strength, competition, budget, skills, etc.

But here at Ahrefs, we decided to sift through the petabytes of historical ranking data that we have and give you a slightly more quantifiable answer, something more concrete than simply, “It depends.”
